Commonplace Books

Melding Creativity, Critical Thinking & Community:
The Commonplace Book

A place for reflection, art, journaling, life questions. A compilation of life at that moment, a consideration of  the past that made us who we are today, and a contemplation of  the future and its possibilities. This is my favorite tool that I always use with every class and every student. Cohort Amy Knowles presented this as her demo in the 2009 Ozarks Writing Project Summer Institute and I ran with it.

Commonplace Books

Commonplace books are amazing. These messy, creative books can do anything you want them to. They aren't journals and they aren't scrapbooks but are kind of a combination of the two.

The "I Am" spread

Students write and design metaphors of themselves. This type of abstract thinking really stretches some students.

About Me spread

The About Me spread are the first pages we do, usually in the first full week of school. Students just create the pages to portray aspects of their life and personalities. A low-risk fun way to introduce ourselves.

Altered Books

This is a project we've done in Creative Writing. Students take discarded books and they create using the book as their canvas.
